Fed: Key dates in Howard-Costello relationship

Key timings in Howard/Costello leadership speculation:



1995 - John Howard becomes Liberal leader, Peter Costello becomes deputy.

1996 - Howard government elected, with Costello as Treasurer.

1999 - Costello says he has one or two more budgets in him.

2003 - Howard reverses his plan to consider retiring in the lead-up to his 64th birthday.

2004 - Howard government wins fourth consecutive election with unexpected Senate majority.

2005

Jan - Labor leader Mark Latham quits, is replaced by Kim Beazley.

April - Howard says he's looking forward to contesting 2007 election against Beazley.

May - Costello reportedly asks Howard for timetable for leadership handover; hands
down 10th budget.

Nov - Costello says he is preparing 11th budget for May 2006.



What's ahead:

Next election due late 2007.

Jan 26, 2006 is 40th anniversary of the retirement of Robert Menzies - Howard's role
model and the only PM to have served for longer than Howard.

March 2 is 10th anniversary of Howard government's election.

On March 15 Howard will sit beside the Queen as she opens the Melbourne Commonwealth
Games. It will also be approximately 18 months until the next election.
