Vic: Undercover cops target fire bugs
Police say they're going undercover to catch arsonists .. after a surge in the number
of firebugs in Melbourne's eastern fringe last summer.
They say 21 suspicious fires .. started in the Yarra Ranges last summer .. are still
inder investigation.
The blazes endangered the mix of outer suburban and regional communities nestled throughout
the forested mountain area.
Detective Sergeant MARTY FLEMING says the number of suspicious fires last year was
a substantial increase on previous years.
To stop the firebugs .. plain-clothes police in unmarked four-wheel drives will patrol
tracks and roads in high risk areas .. as part of Operation Hussar.
Detective Sergeant FLEMING says it's important people call Triple-0 to report suspicious
firebug activity .. or Crime Stoppers with any background information.
