The NOF Corporation has developed a monomer composition which provides a plastic optical material with a high refractive index and Abbe number, a low specific gravity and excellent physical properties, namely dyeing properties, heat resistance and impact resistance.
The composition comprises a di(meth)acrylate compound, as well as divinylbenzene and/or divinylbiphenyl, a crosslinking-type isocyanate compound, a polythiol compound with two or more thiol groups, and a thiourethane bonding accelerating compound.
The plastic optical material obtained by the reaction of the above composition with a radical polymerization initiator is used to make a lens.
In recent years the field of optical materials used for lenses has increased demand for materials with additional properties such as reduced weight, enhanced optical properties and increased toughness. The materials used for lenses are changing from conventional inorganic glass to synthetic resins. Some synthetic resins have had disappointing optical properties; however the new monomer composition addresses this problem providing superior optical characteristics.
