Fed: McGauran urges states to accept Murray-Darling plan

PERTH, Feb 21 AAP - Federal Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran says the states must
stop playing politics and agree in principle, at least, to the commonwealth's Murray-Darling
river system plan.

The federal government wants Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia to hand
control of the rivers to the commonwealth in exchange for a huge upgrade of irrigation
infrastructure and measures to address the over-allocation of water.

Only NSW Premier Morris Iemma has agreed to the plan, and Victorian Premier Steve Bracks
