Fed: A number of Libs interested in leadership roles: Vanstone
CANBERRA, Aug 4 AAP - Senator Amanda Vanstone bared the oft-secret ambitions of herpolitical colleagues today in a candid admission that almost everyone in the lower housethought they could be prime minister.
"They all look down there, see the prime minister, and you can see down in their littlehearts ... they actually think they could do his job," she said, referring to politicianssitting in the House of Representatives.
Admitting a number of Liberals would be interested in leadership positions if theybecame available, the government frontbencher said those wanting the leadership jobs wouldhave to bide their time.
Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer is reportedly interested in the party's deputyleadership position and that of treasurer.
There is also ongoing debate over the possible succession of Peter Costello as prime minister.
Senator Vanstone told the Ten Network there was interest within the party over futureleadership positions.
"I think there's a lot of people who would, in the event that a leadership positionbecame available, be interested," she said.
Senator Vanstone said almost every person in the House of Representatives believedthey could be prime minister.
But they would have to wait until the current incumbent, John Howard, decided to step aside.
"They all think they could do the job, but the prime minister's got the job, he's doinga damn good job, and when a leadership position becomes available people can turn theirminds to it."
