NSW: More roads close due to bushfires

SYDNEY, Dec 25 AAP - Major highways across NSW have been closed as bushfires continue
to rage in hot and windy conditions.

The Pacific Highway in the state's north is expected to be closed this afternoon if
conditions do not improve substantially.

Two bushfires have sent smoke billowing into the air causing traffic delays and poor visibility.

Police have urged motorists to take extreme care on the highway at Dirty Creek Ranges
near Coffs Harbour and at Valla Beach near Nambucca.

Throughout the day police have had to close sections of the Great Western Highway west
of Sydney because of bushfires.

The highway at St Marys and Penrith has been closed and is unlikely to reopen in the
coming hours, a police spokesman said.

Meanwhile, a brown haze is beginning to move across Sydney as bushfires burn on the
city's outskirts.
